There, peeping above the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for awhile. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up and out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing; there was light and high beauty forever beyond its reach. J.R.R. Tolkien

Simple Day

Today was simple. I let grumpiness creep in. No idea why, but I finally asked it to leave a nice, simple day alone. We put our flag up. We did lots of reading. Brian was home. We worked on our "anti-boredom" list for the summer. We went for a walk as a family, and Elijah went from furious at being asked to walk to loving it and racing everyone. (Endorphins maybe?) We watched a documentary about the history of Arlington National Cemetary, which was quite worthwhile. Coach Dad yet again patiently and excellently worked with both boys on baseball. The day finished off with the backyard firepit and a lovely sunset over the mountains. Of course, no firepit is complete without boys waving flaming sticks and spitting at the fire. I am second-guessing my decision to throw my used peppermint tea bag on the fire. It really smelled a bit suspicious--frankly, ahem, like burning "herbs".

Thankful for a simple day.
Thankful for all the people who have served and are serving our country.

Tomorrow I must face the summer list for myself which looks terrifically intimidating.
But today was just simple.

Time to make sure we're all showered before bed so I don't have to add washing sheets that smell like fire to tomorrow's list.
