We had a looonnnnggg day on July 4. We only had one church service which meant all the kids showed up for children's church at once. Quite a crowd to teach. After that, it was the church picnic. We actually bought a little bit of time because lightning moved in and we shut down the picnic early. We don't mess around with lightning. We know someone who was struck by lightning right here in Castle Rock and just recently, there was a lightning strike and fire in the field by our church building right before Saturday night service. After that, we headed up to Invesco Field to meet up with some family for the Denver Outlaws lacrosse game. The sky was black, there was a tornado watch, rain was falling, and lightning was everywhere. I almost didn't get out of the car to walk to the stadium. We were surrounded by lightning. Since I am writing in my blog, you can probably guess that we survived the lightning without incident....
We had our rain ponchos and managed to find seats under the overhang, so we actually stayed remarkably dry, despite steady rain followed by a torrential downpour. Joseph loved the lacrosse game and watched it very intently. He can remember so much about games--who scored, when they scored, all kinds of stats. Somehow, the fireworks show still happened and it was a really good one. Elijah was terrified until I forced him to look up. After that, he was hooked and spent the whole show yellling, "Wow, it's beautiful!" and "I don't BELIEVE this!" He was a riot.
As is the case with most of life here on this earth, a day of activity and life for us was a day of stillness and loss for others. My Great Uncle Jim, a WWII vet, died early that morning.
