There, peeping above the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for awhile. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up and out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing; there was light and high beauty forever beyond its reach. J.R.R. Tolkien

Saying Good-Bye

12 years ago today, we buried our daughter. This anniversary of her death has been particularly difficult for us. The pain has grabbed us a bit harder this year. I want to share the poem my sister wrote in the middle of the night after she heard the news that Whitney had died.

Whitney Leigh

A tear in Texas falls tonight
in grief so deep and loss so sharp
for she whose coming was so desired
for she who never came.

A tear in Texas falls tonight
as man and woman question why
their dreams and prayers so futile seem
when she is taken from their arms.

For their arms will never hold the child
their eyes will never watch her sleep
except the sleep that never fades
when they hold her tiny body close.

A tear in Denver falls tonight
many tears from brokenhearted
as we mourn what could have been
and who she already was.

A tear in Denver falls tonight
we ponder and we cry aloud
dear God why would you allow this pain
to those you hold so dear?

A tear from heaven falls tonight
as he holds our beloved close
He speaks comfort to our aching hearts
and whispers that He still knows best.

Oh God, to trust in sorrowing times
when dreams and hopes and faith fade dim
hold us close to you as well
and reunite us on that day.

But now the tears just fall and fall
and bid you now, sweet child, farewell
we must believe you're safe, little girl
though you have gone so far away.

  1. I will never forget that day. My prayers are with you as you never recover from the loss of a child. I love seeing your heart for God despite the tragedy that you have suffered.

It's always fun to get comments, but if you post anonymously, I don't know who you are! It would be super if you would leave your name.
