There, peeping above the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for awhile. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up and out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing; there was light and high beauty forever beyond its reach. J.R.R. Tolkien

Two More of Our Boys

Brian and I have two biological boys. We also have this whole other group of boys. It's a pretty big group. They're "our boys" from over the years of youth mininstry. We love these boys. We only get to be part of their lives for awhile, but they never stop being "our boys". What a gift to us from God and their parents to allow us to share in their lives.

Today, one of "our boys" is a long way away. He's on his first deployment. He's in Afghanistan. This isn't the first of our boys that has deployed, but it affects me just as deeply every time.

We also have another of our boys headed out soon.

We love you, boys. You might have those deep voices and tower over us and look like the strong, handsome soldiers you are, but to us? You're still "our boys".
