There, peeping above the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for awhile. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up and out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing; there was light and high beauty forever beyond its reach. J.R.R. Tolkien

#1: Carpet Stain and Odor Remover

All the credit for this recipe goes to my aunt. It works. Pet accidents, vomit, grape juice, coffee.

Blot up the spill or accident. If there are chunks, you have to get rid of those too. Ewww, right? This is a great recipe, but it does not miraculously dissolve the chunks.

2 C. hydrogen peroxide
2 tsp. baking soda
2 drops dish soap

Stir. Pour over area to be treated. Let sit for 24 hours. Blot.

Hydrogen peroxide is quite useful, really. Cheap too. It can be watered down and put in a spray bottle and used as a disinfectant spray. You can soak your toothbrush in it. (You know how gross toothbrushes are, right?) It's great stuff.

One word of caution: It is really hard on your skin. I would suggest gloves if you plan to have any prolonged contact with it.

One really good thing: Hydrogen peroxide is hard on the skin, but it breaks down into hydrogen and oxygen in less than half an hour and is utterly harmless at that point. This is quite excellent news for pets or small children or really odd people who may lick at the spot on the rug. It is also good news for people who might potentially use their toothbrush again at some point. Yay for non-poisonous, non-toxic residue!

One suggestion: Do not store it in a clear spray bottle (if you use it as spray) or in the light. It likes darkness and dark containers or it loses its magic powers.
