There, peeping above the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for awhile. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up and out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing; there was light and high beauty forever beyond its reach. J.R.R. Tolkien

What Stirs You?

I was reading a blog post by a pastor and found some lists he made. The first listed things that stir his affection for Christ. The second listed things that rob him of his affection for Christ. His challenge was to do the same, so here goes:

Things that Stir my Affection for Christ:

1) Hot coffee in hand, crisp morning, fresh air
2) Watching the sun set
3) Reading the way Jesus talked to his disciples in the book of John
4) Reading anything by A.W. Tozer, but especially The Pursuit of God
5) When a worship leader loses himself in Christ and forgets we are there
6) A sermon by John Piper
7) Teaching the Word to anyone, especially my kids
8) Writing, prayer journaling, studying the Word

Things that Rob me of my Affection for Christ:

1) Sleeping in or staying up unnecessarily late
2) Not getting enough fresh air
3) Not exercising
4) Overeating or making poor food choices
5) Fixing my eyes on what other people have or what they look like
6) Reading too much fiction (a habit the Spirit allowed me to kill a few years back but it could creep back in if I'm not vigilant)
7) Too much time online or watching movies
8) Deciding I need "me" time instead of "us" time (Christ and me)
9) Idleness
